Generous and delicious gourmet sandwiches prepared by friendly staff while you wait. One is easily large enough to split with your little sister. Boursin, smoked turkey, remoulade, roast beef, chicken parm, and fancy tuna and artichoke sandwiches on fresh-baked focaccia, whole wheat, rye, or white bread are some of the tempting choices ($4.50-6). A variety of fabulous veggie sandwiches will delight even the pickiest of vegetarians (all under $5). Fresh pastas, salads, and pasta salads round out the menu ($4-6). Limited and uninspiring seating; you may prefer to take out.

A feast for the tastebuds, and senses. A new open air food market in Harvard Square delivers gourmet goodies to foodies and college students alike with it's hot prepared foods, salad, and sushi bars; or sandwichs at the New York-style deli. There is a large produce selection collection and wide selection of chocolate goodies. All of this lovely food can be enjoyed there, or packaged for later.

Yes, Cardullo's is a deli, and an excellent one at that. Most students in pursuit of hot pastrami may rush past what they consider merely to be a gourmet haven of shelves stacked high with imported beers from European microbreweries, digestive biscuits, and dark, dark chocolate. But just inside the door is a deli extraordinaire; you won't find a sandwich stuffed with ¼ lb Westphalian ham ($7) or imported prosciutto ($7) at ABP. Try the Parisian (60% brie with apples and mustards on a baguette, $6; with ham, $7), the peerra falata (gorgonzola, Basque pear, and honey mustard on a baguette; $7.45), or the Radcliffe (your choice of fresh paté on a French baguette; $7). The deli is wheelchair-accessible; the cramped and crowded store is definitely not.

If America is the melting pot of the world, ABP fulfills that function for the diverse denizens of Cambridge. Preppy students, homeless Spare Change salesmen, dazzled tourists, obsessive chessmasters, and the occasional trapped bird have congregated here for over twenty years, and the place shows no sign of losing its cosmopolitan flair. ABP serves up “gourmet fast food,” with fresh bread in many incarnations (bagels, sandwiches, and pastries $1-5). Catch the daily bake sale (4-6pm) at the Mass. Ave. location, when all pastries are 50% off. You'll also find ABP branches in Brattle Sq. and at 1100 Mass. Ave., toward Central. Also at 27 Brattle St. and 1100 Mass. Ave.
The Au Bon Pain at 27 Brattle Street in Harvard Square served as the location in "Good Will Hunting" where Will tries to explain himself to Harvard student Skylar.

Fast food, Harvard style. Fresh sandwiches ($4-6) such as Smoked Turkey and Roast Chicken are served up to a mix of busy tourists and undergrads relaxing in the Yard. C'est Bon rounds out its quality array of caffeinated products, like cappuccino, latte, and delicious hot chocolate, with a wide selection of baked goods ($1-4). And it's Lebanese owned and run, so try one of their many Middle Eastern sandwiches or wraps; the falafel is particularly good.

Don't let the Busch beer sign mislead you—Darwin's is an oasis of gourmet food, just minutes away from the heart of the Square. But don't let the promise of gourmet food fool you, either; Darwin's also carries a decent selection of beer and wine. The deli counter is the home of the best sandwiches ($5.75-7.25) around, named for local streets intersecting with Brattle. Try the “Longfellow,” ham with cheddar and fresh apple slices, or the “Mount Auburn,” smoked turkey and cheese with avocado and tomato. Add some variety to your meal with one of Darwin's tasty sides, like pasta salad or broccolini, and enjoy it in the relaxed atmosphere of the store's fully-stocked coffee bar. The staff, mirroring the general ambiance, is friendly and inviting. Also a good selection of fresh fruit, veggies, and organic and specialty foods.

You'll also find pricey frozen items like individual pesto and goat cheese pizzas ($7), a small bakery, a decent cheese selection and imported European cookies. This family-owned store/deli is the perfect stop for the ingredients of an Italian meal: 14 kinds of filled fresh pastas, sauces made in-store, fresh bread daily, fruit, herbs, veggies, imported confections, a great selection of cheeses, and fine desserts. You can also buy lunch (eat-in or take-out), pre-made dinners (daily selections), both of which come in hearty Italian portions, and party favors.
